Cane toad, iguana & nuisance wildlife control in Fort Lauderdale

With roughly 165 miles of inland waterways, Fort Lauderdale is iguana country — and cane toads and other nuisance wildlife aren’t far behind. Toad Shield protects your pets, your seawall and your family.

They call Fort Lauderdale the Venice of America for a reason: roughly 165 miles of canals and inland waterways wind through neighborhoods like Las Olas Isles, Rio Vista, Harbor Beach, Coral Ridge, and Seven Isles. Nearly every one of those waterfront lots has a seawall, and seawalls are where green iguanas dig, nest, and bask.

Away from the water, the story is cane toads. Neighborhoods like Victoria Park, Tarpon River, Imperial Point, and the areas around the New River have dense tropical landscaping, older storm drainage, and plenty of standing water after summer storms. Dogs on their evening walk are usually the ones that find the toads.

Where we see the most activity in Fort Lauderdale

  • Las Olas Isles, Seven Isles & Harbor Beach

Finger-isle waterfront homes with long seawalls and docks — heavy iguana burrowing and droppings.

  • Rio Vista & the New River

Mature canopy and river frontage where iguanas climb, nest, and dig.

  • Victoria Park & Coral Ridge

Lush landscaping and lots of evening dog walks — prime conditions for cane toad encounters.

  • Imperial Point & Lauderdale Isles

Canal-front neighborhoods with both iguana and toad activity.

Cane toad removal in Fort Lauderdale

Cane toads thrive in Fort Lauderdale’s irrigated, tropical yards and the storm drains that run beneath them. After a summer downpour they come out in force on lawns, sidewalks, and patios. We sweep and remove, block access points under gates and fences, and install barrier so your back yard is a safe place for your dog at night.

Invasive & nuisance wildlife in Fort Lauderdale

Beyond iguanas, Fort Lauderdale’s waterfront neighborhoods see Muscovy ducks fouling docks, pool decks, and lawns, curly-tailed lizards along seawalls and patios near the beach, and Cuban treefrogs packed into downspouts and pool enclosures. Raccoons and opossums den under docks, in garages, and in the attics of older homes, and the occasional escaped or released nonnative lizard turns up around the waterways. Snake calls are usually nonvenomous black racers, corn snakes, or brown water snakes near the canals. Removal depends on the species, your property, and FWC rules.

Iguana control in Fort Lauderdale

This is the big one. Green iguanas dig tunnels behind and beneath seawalls that wash out backfill, crack caps, and lead to expensive repairs. Their droppings on docks, boats, and pool decks can carry salmonella. We run humane trapping and removal for single homes and HOAs, inspect seawalls for burrows, and recommend exclusion and landscaping changes that make the waterfront less attractive.

Fort Lauderdale tip

How to spot an iguana burrow

Look at the base of your seawall cap, under dock ledges, and beneath pool decks for openings a few inches across, often with fresh dirt fanned out in front. Catching burrowing early is far cheaper than repairing a failed seawall.

Fort Lauderdale questions we hear

Is it legal to remove iguanas in Fort Lauderdale?
Yes. Green iguanas are an invasive, non-native species in Florida and are not protected except by anti-cruelty law. They can be humanely removed from private property with the owner’s permission — which is what we do, following FWC guidelines.
Do iguanas really fall out of trees when it gets cold?
They can. When temperatures drop into the 40s, iguanas become cold-stunned and may fall from trees. They usually aren’t dead and often recover as it warms up, so don’t bring one inside or handle it. If you have a cold-stunned iguana on your property, call us.
